Akina Nakamori was/is a big singing star in Japan, especially in the 80s. Her star is a bit tarnished now but she continues to perform. This particular song, Mushroom Dance, is off of her 1986 album called 不思議 (fushigi ~ strangeness) and it is NOT representative of her hits at all.
Lots of voice manipulation, lots of unique lyrics. Her voice is huskier than the usual pop idols and she has never song particularly 'happy' songs. Not that they are dark and brooding but she's not a squeaky-voiced girlie-girl pop singer.
